Productivity. Find the time a site loses, while it can still be recovered.

Idle plant, broken haul cycles, crews waiting on access. Productivity is lost in small pieces across a shift, and each piece costs money. Background observes the work, reads it against the plan and tells the person who can recover it today.

PAS 4010 Improving productivity in infrastructure development and delivery

The new BSI specification, sponsored by the ICE and the Department for Transport.

What Background watches for

Plant standing idle or waiting to be loaded
Haul and cycle times against the planned rate
Crews waiting on access, materials or permits
Output against the programme, shift by shift
Alignment

How it lines up with PAS 4010.

Background supplies evidence for the system you already run. It does not certify you, and it does not replace your own processes.

The standard asks you to Background contributes

Understand the drivers that boost or restrict productivity

Observed evidence of where time is lost, by activity and by cause

Measure productivity and keep improving it

Output against plan, shift by shift, from observation rather than estimate

Embed it in existing reporting and assurance

Findings delivered into the channels and reports teams already use

Example

Three loads behind, found by mid-morning.

The excavator has stood for 30 minutes waiting on a vehicle and the haul turnaround has stretched to two hours. Read against the programme, today finishes about 36 m³ short. There is still a shift to recover it.

Example finding
